Year in Review
It’s hard to believe that I’m facing down the calendar and suddenly it’s the end of November which means it’s time to take a look back and do a quick review of where we’ve been in 2016 and begin to think about where we’re headed in 2017.
Workshops:
- The year was kicked off by hosting a 310 workshop in January. Julie Goss, Karl Christians, and Matt Jaeger presented on 310 law, processing, and projects.
- 2nd annual grazing monitoring workshop in conjunction with the Beaverhead Deerlodge Forest Service and Jeff Mosely in June
- 2nd annual pasture walk centered on management intensive grazing under pivots at LaCense Ranch in July
- Hosted soil health workshop with SWCDM in October with Jim Gerrish discussing grazing techniques.
- Hosted North 40 Ag soil health and cover crops workshop in October.
- Small acreage pasture walk in November looking at rotational grazing for small operations.
- Rolling Rivers Trailer presented to Dillon 5th grade outdoor school in May and for Lima Schools in October
Projects:
- Worked with Americorps member, Chris Carparelli to begin plans for a soil health demonstration pivot owned by one of our board members. Planting and experimentation will begin in 2017.
- Range monitoring kits completed for the Rangeland Resources Program
- Hosted Fair Booth
- Worked with the Beaverhead Conservation District Range Committee to hold a plant ID contest at the fair
Watershed:
- Poindexter Slough nearly completed, waiting to hear about funding for the last 1/2 mile
- Culvert replacement projects continue to reduce TMDLs throughout the watershed
- Received a WaterSmart Grant (thank you Chris Carparelli) to expand the watershed to tributaries above Clark Canyon Reservoir
- Continue to work with Beaverhead County on various weeds programs
